Qadesh 1300 B C: Clash of the Warrior Kings (Campaign, No 22)
Published in Paperback by Osprey Pub Co (May, 1993)
Authors: Mark Healy and David G. Chandler
Average review score:

Excellent overview of this epic battle of antiquity.
I thoroughly enjoyed this installment of the Osprey Military Campaign Series. As usual, the information is concise, to the point, interesting, and a fascinating read. Also, the maps and other illustrations and photos, are fantastic. If you like ancient history, this is an excellent introduction to a particular epic battle of antiquity.

Full of insights and very well Written
Another excellent book from the Osprey Campaign Series. This earliest recorded Battle in the human history is recounted and critiqued by the author in an exciting manner. As opposed to a mundane account of the battle and the events leading to it, the author constantly provides objective strategic insights to the battle based on the analysis of the battlefield as well as the compositions of the armies. This introductory book is well illustrated and provides photographs of key areas of the battlefields. Highly recommend.

Queen of the Kings Game
Published in Paperback by Compchess Publishing (November, 1997)
Authors: Zsuzsa Polgar and Jacob Shutzman

After playing for 42 years, I found this book #1!!!
I am very honored to have met Judit, Sophia, Susan and Jacob, Susan's husband. We met at the U.S. Amateur Team Championship East in February, 1998 in Parsippany, NJ. I have also been to Susan's "Polgar Chess Authority" a number of times in Queens, NY. There, I talked to Susan, Judit, Max Dlugy, John Fedorowitz, Pal Benko, Alex Chernin, Maurice Ashley, and a many others. But when I first met Susan and Cobi, I felt a need to know more about this fasinating personality, and her sisters. At the Team, I had a chess site on display on my computer. Sophia asked if I could help her find a phone number of a hotel in Amsterdam thru the Internet. She, like her sisters, was a most pleasant person - alive and vibrant! A few weeks later, the owner of the games site and I went to Susan and Cobi's home to set up the site on their computer. Being served coffee by the Women's World Champion was a most memorable experience, AND it tasted GREAT! At the Chessathon, in Newark, NJ on May 30th, 1998, I purchased her book, and she autographed it. To meet a celebrity is one thing; to have them know your name is something else; but to read and learn about their life is the ultimate! The annotated games were great!! But the life and struggle are the key issues here, as are the FAMILY accomplishments! Name a more prolific family in any sport/career!! On August 28th, 1998, Maxwell Scott, my first grandchild, arrived in this world. Labor Day weekend, 2002, will be his first chess lesson, after a visit to the Polgar Chess Authority. Thank you Susan, Judit, Sophia, and Cobi, for telling us of your great lives! Love you all!!! Richard

Inspiring story of an amazing Champion

Okay, so maybe you know who Judit Polgar is, but you aren't clear about who Zsuzsa and Sofia are, right? If so, then this is the book for you!

This book contains lots of behind-the-scenes info on Zsuzsa's tournament career, and the often nasty political tactics that were used to (try and) keep Zsuzsa out of the spotlight. This book gave me a much better appreciation of who Zsuzsa is, how her contributions to chess helped pave the way for her younger sisters (and women in general) to excel in the traditionally male-dominated chess world, and what an amazing player she is in her own right!

Also contain 100+ pages of games annotated by Zsuzsa (including all the games from her 1996 World Championship match with Xie Jun), and lots of color and b/w photos of the sisters and other chess legends (go find Bobby Fischer!).

Excellent, and an easy read, even for non-chess players! I gave it a "9" only because I wanted more, more, more!!! :-

The Quest for the Silver Castle (Tales of the King, Bk 1)

review of Quest for the Silver Castle
Quest for the Silver Castle is a excellent and capivating story. It follows two young children whom are in search for the King. The only way of knowing there is a King is by a Silver Castle that appears on special occasions. The children run into tough trials and wonderful experiences as well. Through the search the children become great and friend and help and encourage each other through each circumstance. This story has a wonderful allegory with excellent meaning behind it. This book is excellent for all ages and genders.

Captivating....
This book is amazingly well written. Arlen and Theodora are soreal that I would not be suprised to meet them on the street. It tellswonderfully the power of Jesus's love for his children. I am very glad that there is more in this series.

Quest for Zero Point Energy Engineering Principles for Free Energy
Published in Paperback by Adventures Unlimited Press (30 January, 2002)
Author: Moray B. King
Average review score:

The Real Deal
I've bought most of the free energy books out there and would put this on my "top ten" list. Most books published on this topic are not technical or rational, or are all hype and offer little of substance. This book is a notable exception in the genre. Moray doesn't reach too far with outlandish conclusions, and therein lies his--and ultimately this book's--credibility. The text is technical in places, and uses terms that may confuse the layman, but a layman could also learn much, as the explanations are nonetheless surprisingly lucid. But be aware that the book is a compilation of technical papers, not a hold-your-hand, dumbed-down, super-rudimentary description.

This book doesn't contain--as many of the naive expect from such books--detailed plans that will allow you to build a free energy motor, nor does it claim to. But it offers concise, referenced, well-edited explanations of an "ether" or "zero-point-energy" theory that is the conceptual backbone of free energy systems. Postulated operational principles of some of the more infamous free energy devices are also included.

I don't usually write reviews, but I made an exception in this case because I am (very) tired of this genre being polluted by so many quacks. Free energy is credible, and possible, and this is one book that helps disseminate useful information on a topic of critical importance to humanity.

Moray King does it again!
And the man just keeps getting better! If you are a researcher into the new energy technologies, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and buy this book. Moray King will save you months of frustration and floundering around. BIG-BANG for the Buck!

The Rabbi King: David of Khazaria
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (21 January, 2001)
Author: Monroe S. Kuttner
Average review score:

historical panorama
this book although a fictional tale is based upon true events that occurred during the period 700 to 1200 AD and covers regions in Europe,Asia and Africa. There is enough information to cover the interest of any history buff and satisfy the lover of adventure, romance, mystery, intrigue and historical politics. The story relates the travels of David, the deposed king of Khazaria until he regains his lost kingdom in such detail and style that should hold the interest of any reader till the final chapter.

A masterful retelling of Khazaria's twighlight hours
Monty Kuttner's book is an outstanding conjectural look at what the final years of Khazar independence might have been like. The empire of Khazaria, a Turkish state in southern Russia which converted to Judaism in the 700's, boasted an advanced civilization and a history which spanned from the early 600's until its destruction by the emerging Russian state in the late 900's and early 1000's. Monty's book takes place in the 1100's, long after the might of the Khazar empire has vanished. His Khazaria is a collection of villages and wandering tribes struggling to fend off their external foes while simultaneously having to deal with internal dissention. The book is meticulously researched and incorporates such diverse elements as the Byzantine Empire, the Kingdom of Georgia, a very young Saladin and Moses Maimonides, and the feared Assassins of Alamut. There are some minor errors of historical fact and Mr. Kuttner tends to oversimplify the "barbarian" nations of the steppe, but overall the pace and quality of the writing allow the reader to suspend his or her disbelief.

Radio Control Foam Modelling
Thank you NEXUS Special Interest Books (UK) for putting this book back in circulation. If anyone is even thinking about building their first Foamie, this book is a must, for it will answer your basic questions on the "dos and don't" about FOAM, a very well though out book for any modeller's first Foam aeroplane.. Thank You David Thomas, Sid King

Great book for beginners and intermediate skilled modellers
Even though the book was written in Europe (it refers to some materials, which are hard to find in the U.S.), its quite useful and well written. I consider myself an experienced scratch builder, but I found a lot of useful information, building techniques, and construction ideas in this book. Highly recommend to everybody using foam in the airplane construction.

Remediating Reading Difficulties
Published in Spiral-bound by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (19 August, 1999)
Authors: Sharon J. Crawley and King Merritt
Average review score:

An excellent resource for anyone working with children
What is so wonderful about this book is that it contains explicit directions for reading activities that support the learning theories presented. It's not some esoteric treatise on reading problems, nor is it difficult to implement the activities described in this book. It also is progressive, so that more basic reading problems as well as higher-level problems are addressed equally. Furthermore, Crawley has also included some great hints on how learning can be supported in the home. On the whole, it is one of the most practical resources a reading teacher can have in his or her library.

remediating reading difficulties-
Crawley and Merritt have produced a book that can be used by both classroom teachers and parents who wish to improve the reading skills of poor readers. The book covers topics from helping children attack words using simple phonic skills to adjusting reading rates for older readers. Each topic includes a description of the reading skill and then a myriad of activities, games and techniques that can be used to improve reading in that skill area. Illustrations make the activities easy to read and create for children. A must for anyone working with readers who need help.

:)
This was one terrific book! I am so glad I came across this author and I have every intention of buying all of Claire Kings books. I have never been so excited about passing a book along to get my friends to read it too, but this one is definetly going to get read again and again. Rafe Camayo was investigating a drug trafficker who also murdered Rafe's brother. Rafe's entire life has been centered around bringing down this man who destroyed his family. What Rafe did not count on was falling in love with the woman that he took 'hostage' to protect not only himself, but her. Olivia Galpas is no marshmallow. She can hold her own and is in no way a victim. Rafe meets up with his partner, Bobby, and the adventure that these three go on is filled with passion, danger, and lots of laughs. The sense of humor of these characters was without a doubt the best part of this book. There were so many laugh out loud moments. Even when the characters were in heated arguments with each other they had you laughing. The taco stand and taxi are not something I will forget anytime soon. Moments when the characters should be scared as heck and sitting on the edge of their seats, instead they were making me laugh. The intrigue of this story lasts from cover to cover. I loved the romance, adventure, excitement, and humor of this book. I guarantee that you will love it too.

Make room on your "keeper" shelf!
This book is an amazing adventure that keeps the reader turning pages late into the night. Well drawn characters and a fast pace make this one a romance to savor. Buy and enjoy. You'll be glad you did.

Reflections in a Jaundiced Eye
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (April, 1990)
Author: Florence King
Average review score:

Amusing, But Not Much More
"Roll over, Ralph Waldo Emerson!" the bookjacket of my copy of REFLECTIONS IN A JAUNDICED EYE exclaims. "The American essay has a new monarch." Unfortunately, the hyperbole isn't remotely true. While Florence King is undeniably erudite and witty, her essays are fairly insubstantial, and tend not to leave a very strong impression after they've been read. They're certainly not worth reading more than once.

While she's no Emerson, perhaps King is a second-rate Mencken. But then again, even that one's debatable (btw I enjoyed her WITH CHARITY TOWARD NONE: A FOND LOOK AT MISANTHROPY considerably more).

the marvelous misanthrope
Florence King has a winning way with words and a rapier sharp wit; a rare soul who lives and writes by her own set of rules, few subjects are spared her criticism, as she pokes holes in the politically correct culture of the day.
Following in the tradition of her mother who was a "muleskinner cusser", Miss King decries the "decline and fall of profanity" which has dwindled down to a few meager 4 letter words. She also has much to say about the pandering of the "Helpists", "personality over character", her aversion to children, and more.

Being one myself, I thoroughly enjoyed Chapter 4, "Spinsterhood is Powerful". She says in this chapter: "I am often accused of being an anti-feminist, and my name is mud at Ms. Magazine, but in truth my whole life has been a feminist statement. The conflict lies not in my outlook and attitudes but in the definition of feminism that has been foisted on America in the late twentieth century".
Chapter 16, about her foray into the lusty romance novel genre (which she wrote under the pseudonym of Laura Buchanan) is hilarious, as are her efforts to write a magazine piece on the work of John Updike.

This collection of 18 essays was originally published in '89, and is a good example of her cynical but humorous viewpoint. Though dreadfully missed as a contributor to National Review Magazine, where she has recently taken her leave (her "Misanthrope's Corner" had graced the back page for decades), her books will continue to delight me, in their uniqueness and passionate spirit of independence.

A purely superb book- straight shots of wit throughout
This is simply a fine book. There exists not another fine wit like this anywhere, now that Mencken is dead.

George Will wrote of Miss King- "If Mencken were alive, he would be her". This is the highest praise imagineable, and well deserved.

Miss King is to prose as Elton John is to rock piano. Do not overlook this book.
